  Nutrient Management Plan Tools

A Nutrient Management Plan (NMP) is intended to ensure that a farm effectively and properly uses manure or organic by-products as a plant nutrient source while minimizing agricultural pollution of surface and groundwater resources. The CLEANEast Program provides two types of NMP assistance.

  • NMP Update: Needed addendums are identified and made to the farm operator’s existing NMP to update the plan for the current farm operations.
  • New NMP: Farm-specific information is collected and used with nutrient management planning computer programs to prepare a NMP for the farm.

To update or prepare NMPs, the Technical Assistance Professional (TAP) conducts an on-site farm visit and, afterwards, uses the information collected with appropriate NMP software packages or “tools” currently approved for use in each of the CLEANEast states. The Manure Management Planner (MMP), developed at Purdue University in cooperation with NRCS, is approved for use in 19 of the 27 CLEANEast states. The remaining CLEANEast states (CT, ME, NC, NH, NY SC, VA, and WV) require state-specific nutrient management planning software.

Information needed to prepare a new or updated NMP for a given farm is collected by the TAP working with the participating farm operator using the CLEANEast Farm Operation Introductory Profile tool and the Farm Profile Operation Supplement (NMP) tool. Confidentiality of the farm-specific information collected using these NMP tools is maintained at all times.
